COVID-19 has caused unprecedented chaos on the global economy. Even the most robust sectors have suffered as a result of the pandemic, leaving millions without an income and others working remotely.

It’s hard to know exactly what the world of work will look like post-coronavirus, but what we do know is that it will be very different compared to what it was like only five months ago.

We’ve teamed up with the world’s first digital business school, ISDI, to find out more about the types of jobs we can expect to see in a post-coronavirus world, and how it’s Digital MBA aims to equip its graduates with the skills and expertise needed to tackle business challenges of the future.

E-commerce

It’s not completely goodbye to brick-and-mortar shopping experience, but it isn’t surprising that at the peak of the pandemic online sales grew by nearly half. Spending habits are changing, and online shopping is becoming a more regular occurrence in households.

Online retailers with a strong and robust online presence are likely to see better sales and profits as they harness the technologies necessary to better their business operations and improve user experience.

It’s likely that the pandemic has accelerated the automation and digitization processes within business as companies seek experienced professionals who are adaptable, quick-thinking and can demonstrate a keen interest in tackling digital business challenges as companies begin to find ways to navigate its way through a chaotic market.

Roles in content development, marketing, project management and business analytics already play a key role within organizations, and are going to be even more valuable as e-commerce “accelerates in the wake of the coronavirus crisis”.

It’s an opportunity for retailers, from fashion to health and beauty, entertainment to fitness, and more, to rethink the ways in which they utilize technology as e-commerce is expected to have a crucial influence on the recovery of both local and global economies.

Telehealth services

The coronavirus pandemic seems to have given rise to wider access to telehealth services. There has been a surge in the number of telemedicine services available worldwide as healthcare professionals and patients utilize digital technology for appointments and checkups where face-to-face appointments aren’t possible, and resources are limited.

It’s now likely that temporary solutions in digital health innovations will lead to long-term changes and becoming part of the mainstream health services.

Those who have an eye for detail, are highly analytical and are good problem-solvers will be welcomed into roles within telehealth and telemedicine where business expertise and skillsets are needed to help make systems more efficient, effective and accessible.

Information technology

At the start of 2020, countless predictions were made about how much further we could push technology for the benefit of society over the coming decade. Now, the world has recognized how valuable technology is in an age where working from home is now the norm.

The World Economic Forum estimated in 2019 that by 2022, over 133 million new digital tech roles will have been created. But COVID-19 has accelerated the demand for tech talent as organizations strive to safely secure security gaps within their business and optimize IT systems for employees to work from home, meaning careers in the tech sector are likely to boom over the coming months.

Heads of Technology and Heads of Data and Insights will be in high demand, while other roles in network automation development, and development and security operations will also be needed.

A specialized MBA program, such as the Digital MBA at ISDI, which has campuses in Barcelona and Madrid, enables students to foster their diverse digital skillset and expertise in areas including digital technologies, digital business leadership and digital business execution.
